Μετανάστευση: είμαστε όλοι νομάδες

Το πρόβλημα της μετανάστευσης στην Ελλάδα είναι υπαρκτό και έντονο.  H κατάσταση εκτυλίσσεται σχεδόν ανεξέλεγκτα από τη μεριά της πολιτείας και απαιτούνται χειρισμοί με ευαισθησία και κοινωνική υπευθυνότητα. Το πόσους μετανάστες μπορεί να αντέξει αυτή η χώρα αλλά και η Ε.Ε. πρέπει να συνεκτιμάται στις διπλωματικές κινήσεις της Ευρώπης για επενδύσεις στην ανάπτυξη των λαών από τους οποίους προέρχονται οι απελπισμένοι αυτοί άνθρωποι. Ουσιαστική μείωση στη ροή μεταναστών θα επέλθει αν εστιάσουμε στις πραγματικές αιτίες που την προκαλούν πχ. πόλεμοι, φτώχεια, διαφθορά κλπ.. Δεν πρέπει να ξεχνούμε ότι η ιστορία της Ευρώπης είναι μια ιστορία μεταναστών από τους οποίους γεννήθηκαν διαφορετικές γλώσσες και χώρες. "Είμαστε όλοι νομάδες" τονίζει στο γράμμα του προς την εφημερίδα AthensPlus ο John Gill.

We are all nomads


I would like to add my voice to Con Ghitgas’s comments on Greek identity. Although I now live on Skopelos – “yia panta,” forever – I spent the past eight years living in Ronda, Andalucia, Spain. I just published my latest book, “Andalucia: A Cultural History,” which credits the Greeks with inventing both Spain and Europe (you stepped ashore at Ampurias, in Cataluna, some time in the 2nd century BCE, carrying olive trees and grape vines, and quickly moved on to Cadiz...). While a cultural history, part of the point of my book is that with the rise of racism in modern Europe, we need to realize that we all have more in common than we think. As a nomad, I have been grateful to both my Spanish and Greek neighbors for their friendship and kindness – friendship and kindness that might not have been extended to a stranger in the city where I was born and lived for 40 years, London. And as xenophobia becomes an increasingly prevalent occurrence in Europe, we should also consider that our interventions in other people’s cultures – Afghanistan, Iraq – are triggering waves of refugees and immigrants. These people do not abandon their families and culture for no reason or simply for economic benefit; they are fleeing horror. And Europe was built by immigrants from, well, Greece, and elsewhere. The entire history of Europe – from those first Greek settlers – has been one of emigration, immigration and assimilation. In short, we are all nomads. I speak as an immigrant myself, and one grateful for Greece’s kindness.
